Plant selection guides
How to choose a plant for your space.
A plant should fit the growing conditions as well as the visual idea. Begin with the position, then compare the actual specimen. This guide brings together the selection questions and care profiles in the Heliconia Garden catalogue.

Start with the space
Decide what the space needs.
Do you want one upright focal point, a spreading leafy form or a layered tropical backdrop? Write down the effect before choosing a name. Compare Fiddle Leaf Fig for upright structure, Monstera for spreading foliage and Calathea Lutea for layered height where the position suits its care needs.
A plant that looks modest in a photo can occupy a substantial part of a room. Measure the available height and width, including the space people need to walk past. Check leaf spread and growth habit as well as the price-tier height. A quoted plant height alone is not a room plan.
Light and routine
Check the growing conditions first.
Take a photo showing the intended position and nearby windows. Tell us when direct sun reaches the spot, whether light is filtered and whether the plant will be beside a window or deeper in the room. Our light guide helps turn that information into a useful enquiry.
Read the individual plant’s light, watering and soil notes. Several statement plants in this collection require bright natural light; a dark interior is not automatically a suitable home for them. Choose a care routine you can maintain. Follow the plant’s published watering guidance rather than assuming every variety needs the same schedule.
Compare specimens
Choose the specimen, not just the variety.
Ask for a current photo, height, width where it matters and current price. Check the available size tier against your measurements. Look at fullness, leaf form and the overall silhouette; living plants naturally vary.
Visit the Piliyandala nursery to compare specimens at real scale. If you are travelling for a particular plant, confirm availability first. Plan your visit; Heliconia Garden is open until 10:00 PM.
Selected titanium pots may help finish the setup. Ask about separate prices, sizes and a suitable pairing with the actual plant. A pot is not automatically included and not every size has a matching option.
Buying checklist
Send a brief that helps us help you.
- A photo of the room or planting area, showing nearby windows.
- Approximate available height and width.
- A description of the natural light and direct sun.
- Your preferred plant or the visual effect you want.
- A request for current photos, size, price and availability.
For more than one area, ask about plant selection and office greenery. Start with conditions rather than a long plant list.
Confidence and care
Understand the support before buying.
Owner-confirmed eligible indoor plants purchased and collected during an in-store visit have a 365-day, one-replacement guarantee. Reasonable accidental care mistakes can be covered, subject to assessment. Keep proof of purchase and return the affected original plant.
A replacement does not restart the guarantee, and there is no cash refund. The policy supports responsible care; it does not make every plant suitable for every position. Read the full plant guarantee.
